Hawthorne Arts Complex – An Artist Community

Available Studios

Hawthorne Arts Complex has recently expanded to 91 studio spaces, and we have a range of new studios now available for rent from $450 to $950. We are down the street from SpaceX, Tesla, L.A. Aleworks, and Common Space Brewery, and only 15 minutes from Venice, Redondo Beach, and Culver City.

Studios range from 150 square feet to 300 square feet. All studios are fully permitted new construction with polished concrete floors, 10ft smooth sheetrock walls, new electric, dimmable LED lighting, and plenty of skylights for bright natural light.

Monthly rent includes all utilities: water, communal sinks, electricity, WiFi, and parking. For fine artists and creators only, no live/work or office work.

HAC has a gallery/event space, along with a communal kitchen and lounge. There is a great outdoor workspace with 220 electric outlets, a kiln room, and a spray room for extra-messy projects.

We currently have over 50 artists at HAC, a Sculpture School, periodic workshops and an active friendly community.

HAC has Open Studios 3 times a year with over 300 guests in attendance, where artists open up their studios to the public and display their current works in the communal gallery.

We feature a new HAC artist each month, which includes a small exhibition and promotion on our social media and newsletter.

All artist have 24/7 access to their studio, providing you with the freedom to create your own schedule.

History

Hawthorne Arts Complex is the second community arts project of Musician/Teacher/Community Organizer/Builder, Danny “Captain Dan” Meyer. After completing the 17 room Creative Music Rooms rehearsal facility in Del Rey, Danny wanted to replicate the Santa Monica Airport Art Studios open top art studio concept for his next project. He found the dilapidated 1957 warehouse in Hawthorne at the former Northrup Grumman defense contractor campus in a Craigslist ad for cheap industrial space. Looking past the tire and electronics junkyard onsite, he rented some space and built a few affordable artist studios in 2014. A long journey ensued, overcoming a foreclosure but the building’s good bones eventually attracted an arts friendly buyer who agreed to partner with HAC and complete a full building renovation for the exclusive use of fine artists. In May 2018 the largest phase of 50 new rooms was completed bringing the total to 91. Future plans include 30 art storage containers outside, another 30 studios inside, a picnic area, sculpture garden, and a proper gallery. Hawthorne Arts Complex appears to be the largest and newest non residential art studio facility in Los Angeles.
