Shoebox Conversations: Stevie Love

Welcome to Shoebox Conversations. Our Shoebox PR team, Kristine Schomaker, Sheli Silverio and S. Vollie Osborn, are meeting up with artists via Zoom to discuss their art practice, new work, upcoming exhibitions, and more.

Please meet Stevie Love:

I live surrounded by nature in an adobe house that my husband and I made by hand on the north-facing slope of the San Gabriel Mountains high above the Western Mojave Desert. It is spectacular for its beauty and intimate connection to nature and it feeds into my painting/sculpture hybrids, which bring to mind the connection between body, mind, and soul, inspired by the space and magical energy of the desert.

My work is made of acrylic paint squeezed out of pastry tubes and squeeze bottles. No brushes were used in its creation because I am looking for the physical presence of the paint to create a three-dimensional painting/sculpture hybrid that enters the space with the viewer. The addition of faux fur adds an element of humor to the seriousness of the endeavor, and esteemed critic, Peter Frank, called my work “the crass and the cosmic”.

My work has been featured in private and public spaces across the U.S., and in Asia, and Europe, and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA, and the Riverside Art Museum, Riverside, CA.
