THIS SUNDAY: Indi Carlton at Shoebox Projects

Come see us this Sunday July 26th from 2 to 5pm at Shoebox Projects, 660 South Avenue 21 #3, Los Angeles CA 90031.

Indi Carlton's solo show Portals to Elsewhere: Dream Creatures and the Art of Remembering opens this weekend. Intuitive painting, sculptural creatures, assemblage, and immersive installation. Work that pulls you in and doesn't quite let you go.

We'd love to see you there.

COMING SOON: Art History Conversations

This is the thing I'm most excited about right now.

I have degrees in art history and studio art. I taught art history and I loved it. And somewhere along the way I stopped teaching the thing I was actually trained to teach. That's changing.

I'm building art history conversations on Zoom through Shoebox. Not the survey version you took in school. The through lines version. How specific artists gave permission to everything that came after them and how you can trace that directly into what's being made today and into your own studio practice.

Some of the conversations I'm building:

The Legacy of Marcel Duchamp — not just the urinal. Everything that followed. Conceptual art, institutional critique, performance, the idea that the idea is the art. All of it traces back to one gesture.

Ana Mendieta: The Body, Land, and Belonging — her earth-body works, the Silueta series, her explorations of displacement and identity. She gave permission to an entire generation of artists and her work is more relevant now than ever.

Cindy Sherman and the Performance of Identity — how she turned the camera around on a whole history of how women have been represented in art, in film, in advertising.

Feminist Art: History and Now — from Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro to the artists working right now. What they fought for, what they built, who was left out, and how that fight continues.

Artists Who Were Rediscovered Late — Lee Bontecou, Lynda Benglis, and so many others. Why does this happen? What does it tell us about who gets to make art history? And who are we missing right now?

Art and Mass Media — how images work, how media constructs reality, how advertising and fine art and politics are all using the same visual language. This one will rewire how you see everything.

Conversations will be on Zoom with occasional field trips. More details on pricing and dates coming soon.

To be the first to know when registration opens follow us on Instagram @shoeboxarts.la or stay on this mailing list. We'll announce it here first.

That's a lot. I know. You don't have to do all of it. But I want you to know it's there.
