I have a confession to make: tucked away on my computer is a folder titled "Artists to Watch" that has grown to over 500 artist images. It started innocently enough—screenshotting work I discovered on Instagram, saving images from gallery visits, collecting business cards from studio tours. But over the years, this digital collection has become something much more significant.
Almost daily, I get messages and calls from curators, gallerists, collectors, and fellow art enthusiasts asking: "Do you know any artists who work with themes of mental health?" or "I'm looking for emerging sculptors working with natural materials" or "Can you recommend BIPOC artists exploring family narratives?" Each time, I find myself scrolling through my sprawling folder, trying to match faces to names, reconnect with half-remembered Instagram handles, and dig up contact information I may or may not have saved.
It hit me recently that if I'm experiencing this, others in our community probably are too. We're all keeping our own informal databases, our own networks, our own mental catalogs of incredible artists whose work deserves broader recognition. But these individual efforts, however well-intentioned, create an inefficient system where opportunities might miss the perfect artist simply because the right connection wasn't made at the right moment.
That's why we're launching the Shoebox Artist Database—to transform those scattered individual efforts into a collective resource that serves our entire creative community.
From Personal Collection to Community Resource
What started as my personal habit of collecting and cataloging incredible work has revealed something important about how our art community actually functions. We're constantly sharing recommendations, making introductions, and trying to connect the right artist with the right opportunity. The problem is that this vital work happens in isolation—scattered across individual networks, limited by personal memory, and constrained by the hours in our days.
This database represents a collaboration between Shoebox and the artists themselves to build something entirely new—a comprehensive resource created by and for our community. Rather than me trying to recreate my personal folder for public use, we're inviting artists to represent themselves directly, providing the information they want to share and presenting their work exactly as they choose.
This collaborative approach ensures that artists maintain control over their representation while creating a resource that serves everyone's needs more effectively than any individual collection could.
Who We're Seeking
The artists I've been collecting in my folder represent the full spectrum of contemporary practice—and that's exactly what we want this database to reflect. From traditional painting and sculpture to cutting-edge digital art, from fiber arts and natural materials to performance and social practice, from artists exploring themes of identity and mental health to those working with environmental concerns and social justice issues.
What unites every image in my "Artists to Watch" folder isn't a particular style or medium, but rather authentic creative expression and compelling visual storytelling. These are artists whose work stopped me mid-scroll, made me screenshot, made me want to learn more. Now I want to make sure that same discovery experience is available to everyone in our community.
Every day, I witness the hunger in our community for discovering new voices. Curators texting me photos from openings asking "Who is this artist?" Gallery owners seeking artists who explore specific themes for upcoming programming. Collectors wanting to support emerging talent but not knowing where to look beyond the usual channels. Art enthusiasts who want to engage more deeply but feel overwhelmed by the vastness of contemporary practice.
All of these daily interactions have shown me that the desire to connect and support artists is already there—we just need better infrastructure to make it happen. The Shoebox Artist Database is that infrastructure, built from years of real-world experience connecting artists with opportunities and fueled by genuine excitement about the incredible work being created in our community right now.
Equally important is our commitment to supporting artists across all career stages. We believe that innovation and inspiration can emerge from anywhere—whether it's a graduate student's experimental thesis project or a mid-career artist's bold new direction. By bringing together artists at different points in their journeys, we create opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and mutual support that might not otherwise exist.
What Makes This Different
Unlike commercial platforms focused primarily on sales, or exclusive networks limited to established professionals, our database prioritizes accessibility and community building. We've designed it to be genuinely useful for multiple audiences while maintaining a focus on meaningful artistic practice over market considerations.
For artists, this means a platform where your work is contextualized within broader thematic and conceptual frameworks, not just reduced to product categories. For curators and gallerists, it means access to a thoughtfully curated pool of artists with comprehensive information about their practices, availability, and interests.
This collaborative approach creates a comprehensive resource where artists can showcase their work alongside information about their interests, availability, and professional goals.
The Power of Representation
One of our core beliefs is that representation matters—not just in who gets to exhibit and sell work, but in who gets to be discovered in the first place. Traditional art world networks, while valuable, can sometimes perpetuate existing hierarchies and limit opportunities for artists outside established circles.
Our database actively works to counter these limitations by casting a wide net and emphasizing the importance of diverse voices. We're committed to ensuring that our platform reflects the true diversity of contemporary artistic practice, including artists from different geographic regions, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic circumstances.
This isn't just about fairness—it's about creating a more vibrant, innovative art world. The most interesting exhibitions, the most meaningful collaborations, and the most groundbreaking artistic developments often emerge when different perspectives and experiences come together. By facilitating these connections, we're investing in the future of creative culture.
Looking Forward
As we launch this database, we're thinking beyond just the immediate connections it will facilitate. We envision it growing into a comprehensive resource that documents the evolution of contemporary artistic practice, tracks emerging trends and themes, and serves as a valuable tool for researchers, educators, and art historians.
We also see potential for the database to inform and inspire programming decisions, helping cultural institutions understand the breadth of work being created in their communities and beyond. This could lead to more inclusive exhibitions, more diverse residency programs, and more opportunities for artists who might otherwise remain invisible to institutional decision-makers.
The success of this project depends on community participation. Every artist who joins the database strengthens the network for everyone else. Every curator who uses it to discover new voices validates the importance of this kind of inclusive resource. Every collaboration that emerges from these connections proves the value of building bridges rather than walls.
Join the Movement
We're inviting artists of all backgrounds and career stages to become part of this growing community. The process is straightforward: complete our intake form with information about your practice, upload representative images of your work, and become part of a network designed to support and amplify your voice.
For curators, gallerists, and other art professionals, we invite you to explore the database as a resource for discovering new talent and building more inclusive programs. We're confident you'll find artists whose work will surprise, challenge, and inspire you.
Please share this opportunity with artist friends and others in the art community. This database is completely free and open to artists internationally. The more diverse voices we include, the stronger this resource becomes for everyone. Help us spread the word so we can build the most comprehensive and inclusive artist database possible.
A Note on Privacy and Consent
Transparency is important to us, so we want to be clear about how this database works. By participating, artists consent to having their information shared publicly with members of the art community for legitimate professional purposes. This includes contact information, portfolio images, artist statements, and other professional details. Artists maintain full ownership of their work and can request removal from the database at any time.
We believe that visibility, when chosen freely and with full understanding, is one of the most powerful tools for artistic career development. Our goal is to provide that visibility in a context that honors both artistic integrity and professional aspirations.
Building Tomorrow's Art World Today
The art world is changing, and we want to be part of that positive transformation. By creating tools that prioritize connection over exclusion, community over competition, and diversity over homogeneity, we're working toward a future where talent and vision matter more than connections and luck.
The Shoebox Artist Database is our contribution to this vision—a practical tool that serves immediate needs while working toward longer-term cultural change. We invite you to be part of this movement, whether as an artist seeking new opportunities or as a cultural professional committed to building a more inclusive art world.

How to Use the Database
The Shoebox Artist Database is built as a Google Sheet that's accessible to anyone in our community. Using the database is straightforward—you can search by location, medium, theme, or style using your browser's search function. Simply use Ctrl+F on PC or Command+F on Mac and search for specific keywords like "ceramics," "Chicago," "mental health," or "emerging artist" to find exactly what you're looking for.
Each artist entry includes an image of their work—simply click on the image link to open and view their artwork directly. This visual component allows you to immediately see the artist's style and approach while browsing their information.
This simple, accessible format means you don't need to learn new software or create accounts—just open the sheet and start exploring. Whether you're looking for a painter in Portland, a textile artist exploring themes of identity, or any sculptor working with natural materials, the search function will help you connect with the right artists quickly and efficiently.
