Karen Hochman Brown presents Photo/Synthesize, an exhibition of three bodies of work focusing on nature, the sea, and floral images, transforming images into radiant kaleidoscopic shapes that are richly immersive.
Hochman Brown begins her work by importing a photograph into a modular graphics-synthesizer program, where using algorithms, distortions, modulations, and symmetries as well as polar and fractal space, she layers her images into works that could be created from stained glass, glowing, deep, and focusing on intense details to develop an emotional response.
Opening Saturday, November 24th at the Yuma Art Center in Yuma, Ariz., Hochman Brown presents art work from three separate series, Anonymous at the Beach; Shoreline Symmetry – Sky and Surf; and Floral Purples and Pinks & Reflections on Roses. These inspiring works expand the boundaries of new media and technology-driven art with their lush and evocative depictions of natural beauty.
In each of her reflections on nature, she weaves layers of art into a single image, with each layer creating additional depth, to draw viewers into the singular world that her artwork represents, as with Floral Purples and Pinks & Reflections on Roses.
Shoreline Symmetry – Sky and Surf builds from Hochman Brown’s childhood past time, collecting driftwood and shells on Santa Barbara beaches. This series presents waters from California, Hawaii and Israel in bilateral symmetry, shaping otherworldly seascapes that combine the raw power of the ocean with ethereal but ominous cloud formations.
Anonymous at the Beach draws from the solace the artist finds at the shore, taking the initial images from photographs of quiet moments in which she was an anonymous observer.
In each series, Hochman Brown transforms and translates natural forms into textures and shapes, forming a collaborative dance between software and the deep wanderings of her imagination.
About Karen Hochman Brown
Karen Hochman Brown is a mixed media artist working in digital and photographic mediums, shaping swirling images that revere nature, color, and natural beauty. With a B.A. in Art from Pitzer College, and post-graduate work at California College of the Arts and Crafts, she’s developed and taught a junior high school curriculum, and continued her studies in the interconnections of math and art via technology at UCLA. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S.
