Palmer Earl’s Dangerous Women is on view as part of Elisa Johns’ Window Art Project in Downtown Inglewood
Please join us for an Artist talk with Palmer Earl and Elisa Johns moderated by Kristine Schomaker March 7, 3pm PST on zoom Facebook event (zoom info below) You can see the installation on the corner of Manchester Blvd and Market St. Women are often demonized for using their beauty to get what they want. They are also punished if they are not attractive enough. In my work, I explore ancient cultures and study how they laid the foundation for the treatment of women today. In the Old Testament the stories of these beautiful and powerful women; Salome, Delilah, Judith, Bathsheba, and Jezebel serve as a warning for men to protect their male-dominated sexual hierarchy. During the Renaissance, these women were popular subjects for paintings and were considered amusing for their reversal of roles. They were also reminders that men were in charge. These ancient tales have made women into the ‘other,’ non-human, and perpetuates our patriarchal society. I focus on these women because it is important to remember where these archaic attitudes came from. Palmer Earl was born and raised in New York City where her passion for painting was sparked at an early age by the city’s many art museums. She began taking painting classes at age seven and went on to receive her BFA from School of Visual Arts. Currently she lives and works in Los Angeles. Palmer is affiliated with the Los Angeles Art Association and has exhibited her work in New York and Los Angeles. Her work was recently featured in an article in Art and Cake article by Betty Ann Brown, “Beauty and the Beast: New visions of women’s relationship with animals” and in Voyage LA “Meet Palmer Earl”. https://www.palmerearl.com/ Elisa Johns received a BA from University of California San Diego and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. Recent solo exhibitions include Roam at Morgan Lehman Gallery (NYC) and Kings Canyon at Ochi Projects (Los Angeles). She currently has work up in group exhibitions at Tif Sigfrids and Ladies’room Los Angeles She has exhibited at Black Dragon Society (Los Angles); Mike Weiss Gallery (NYC); Elizabeth Dee Gallery (NYC); and Morgan Lehman (NYC).
